Recently a group of local firefighters (from Northern Lakes Fire, Coeur d’Alene Fire, and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue) and ER physicians from Kootenai Health traveled to Bolivia for the second time to teach pre-hospital trauma care to Bolivian health care professionals. While there we were able to visit a rural community called Monte Sinai.
This community is located 2 hours drive from a small town on a narrow dirt road. The community is primarily made up of farming families producing sugar cane, soy beans, corn, and potatoes.
The community has approximately 95 elementary students that attend school in the building that is pictured on the cover page (more pictures can be located in the discussion section). These students a dirt floor, spaces between the exterior boards that allow the wind and rain to blow through the classroom, broken down desks, minimal teaching materials, and even a school bathroom that is merely 2 holes in the ground.
The teachers make $350 per MONTH and live in a building that is very similar to the elementary school building. The teachers have to put plastic up on the walls near their beds to keep the wind and rain off of them while they sleep! The community has a difficult time keeping teachers due to the living conditions the teachers have to endure. To say the least, the conditions are horrible both for the students and the teachers.
Our Medical Educators for Latin Aamerica (MELA) CDA Branch group made up of firefighters, paramedics, and ER physicians, have committed to providing the funds to build a school in Monte Sinai! We are working with an organization called Mano a Mano Bolivia, a non-profit organization in Bolivia that builds medical clinics, schools, and roads in rural Bolivia. Over the past 25 years Mano a Mano has constructed 167 medical clinics and this will be their 63rd school. All of these buildings are still operating under their original function!
With the help of Mano a Mano we can build a 6 classroom school, teacher housing for up to 8 teachers, and modern bathrooms for a total donation cost of $36,000. We have seen the quality buildings Mano a Mano constructs with my own eyes, and can attest they are the nicest buildings for miles around. After building the structures, Mano a Mano provides furniture and has contracts with the Bolivian government to pay the teachers for the school. For $36,000 we can change the lives of the 95 current students, 8 teachers, and the thousands of children that will attend this school for generations to come!
Please join us for an afternoon of golf, fun, laughter, and fundraising to make this happen for an amazing community. This is a golf scramble, so no need to be a good golfer. Please find 3 friends and register for the tournament at: https://www.emtfiretraining.com/amember4/signup/montesinai
